The Halal Guys: NYC Street Food In London

One of the most exciting news in London’s street food scene this month is the official opening of New York’s legendary ‘The Halal Guys’ first restaurant near Leicester Square on 30th March 2019.

The Halal Guys: 14 Irving Street, London, WC2H 7AF

From its humble beginning of a small street food cart on the pavement in New York, The Halal Guys has since become an international fast food phenomenon, with over 200 outlets all over the world.

Back in 2013, my friend and I had to queue for almost 2 hours before we could get our hands on those infamous platters of chicken and gyro combo.  We heard so much hype about The Halal Guys that we had to try them no matter how hectic our schedule was during New York Fashion Week.  I remembered the portion being massive!  (Well, maybe it was standard US portion, but that portion was enough to last 4 meals for the 2 of us!)

The famous combo platter consists of grilled chicken shredded into small pieces, thinly sliced grilled beef, steamed rice, lettuces, diced tomatoes, falafels, jalapeno peppers and the tzatziki-like ‘White Sauce’ and red chilli ‘Hot Sauce’.  The meat was cooked to perfection, but what really made The Halal Guys so special and moreish was definitely the White Sauce.

Needless to say, I was jumping with joy when I heard about their first London restaurant opening.  After all, it was 6 years ago since my first experience of The Halal Guys in New York.  I was curious whether the London version would live up to its original New York big brother.

The speedy service at The Halal Guys London in Irving Street combined with freshly cooked meat and arrays of ingredient options to choose from certainly did not disappoint.  There are also sides such as chips, hummus, baba ganoush, and dessert options such as baklavas.  The London portion was much smaller than its New York version, but personally, I think that was a good thing!  At least I could finish everything in one meal comfortably.  The quality of the combo platter was just as good as the one in New York.  I certainly will be coming back for more.

NOTE: I was invited as a guest to this restaurant.
