LFW AW17 Part 4: Burberry – The Beauty and The Strange

“We looked at the contradictions in Moore’s work, between power and gentleness, heaviness and lightness, familiarity and abstraction. Between the hardness of his materials and the fluidity and softness of his forms. And we thought about the way in which he makes objects that combine beauty with oddness, the recognisable with the strange.” – Christopher Bailey

This London Fashion Week, Burberry is all about deconstruction of the body inspired by Henry Moore’s iconic sculptures.  The notion of beauty is being challenged from the norms by distorting proportions and silhouettes… and you know what?  I love it!!

For those who have seen my previous blog posts and Instagram, you know how much I love playing with proportions and layering, well, this collection is all about that!  They have even taken it further by playing with asymmetrical form and contradicting textures such as layering soft sensual materials such as lace and tulle with rough rugged textures like shearling.

Gone is the classic Burberry trench coat, but strongly present in almost every look is the abstract idea of what the trench coat is all about – and that is the emphasis on the shoulder, expressed in the form of capes and capelets instead. [More on this in my next post]

Burberry February 17 Finale of Bespoke Capes

There are some very powerful mix-and-match ideas that I definitely will be trying out later on this year.  I got very inspired from the show, especially when these creations are seen through the sculptural voids of Henry Moore’s masterpieces.

Here are some of my favourite looks.  Which one do you like best?
