“…if I had to use one phrase to describe my own artwork, it’s the celebration of the beauty of the bittersweetness of life. Growing up, I thought that everything had to be ‘perfect’ and ‘right’ – but nothing is ‘right’, nothing is ‘perfect’, everything has flaws but those flaws are beautiful; they make us who we are individually and are a part of our humanity…” – Gary Baseman
After a magical evening at the Serpentine Pavilion for their annual 2015 Serpentine Summer Party, I realise that its beauty is in the way it interacts with the changing light conditions, and the natural surrounding that it lands upon… The colourful shadows it creates at midday, the beautiful glows it gives at night, and of course, the endless distorted vibrant reflections when one walks by its skin… Somehow, the Pavilion comes alive when there are people inside and around it. It morphs, distorts, reflects and reacts to constant movements created by visitors… by the swaying leaves of nearby trees… In a way, it is a little bit like when caterpillars become butterflies through metaphorsis. It sheds its flaws, and transforms into a colourful delicate creature that reacts playfully to its surrounding.
So, with this in mind, I decided to go play with the Pavilion with my new imaginary friend, Kiki, my red feathered birdgirl from Coach x Baseman SS15 collection. In a way, this particular character from Les Fauves by Gary Baseman represents a very crucial side of my personality because I always end up doing things differently from everyone else… One could say that I am not one to blend in and follow the crowd just so people can say that I am normal and do things for the sake of fitting in… I prefer to do what works and feel right for me in every aspect of my life, which makes the whole journey all the more exciting and enjoyable. Of course, I make plenty of mistakes along the way, but in the end, who doesn’t, right? It is so much more important to learn from one’s mistakes, and not repeat the same again than to be scared of making any sort of failures and not to live life fully, just to please people who do not even matter in the long run… After all, there is no greater tragedy in life than to lose oneself and accept the version that is expected by everyone else. Well at least I would like to believe that Kiki shares the same belief!
… and here’s the result of our play date with the ephemeral Selgascano’s 2015 Serpentine Pavilion…. Because life is colourful and beautiful even in its endless flaws… It is the struggles that makes the most lasting memories… And the limitations in life that truely helps us flourish and transform into a beautiful being…
