On Monday I attended the breakfast preview of this lovely capsule series of artwork “LOVE” by Damien Hirst at Paul Stolper Gallery in London.
The exhibition consisted of “LOVE GOLD” a portfolio of love heart prints in gold leaf foil blocked with a single butterfly in the centre, 2 love heart pill sculptures and a “Love Struck” heart pierced scultpture in a sweet jar.
I’m starting to feel that Hirst’s artwork is becoming more of decorative objects rather than shocking avant-garde art that he was so famous of earlier in his career. (and I meant this in a good way, by the way) His recent work and collaborations are very commercial driven… remember my article on Lalique x Hirst Eternal tiles at Maison & Objet just a few weeks ago? Having said that, I actually like how he is making his art more accessible to the masses without losing their integrity. I especially like these butterfly prints and pill sculptures. They are certainly beautiful in a minimalistic way, and would add great character to any interiors.
As for the concept for this particular series of work? Well there is no better way of explaining it, except to quote Damien Hirst himself that “Love is a beautiful thing and I see it as a small antidote to all the horror in the world.”
So I hope you enjoy the vision of LOVE by Damien Hirst and Happy Valentines everyone!
